About The Kings of Innocence

For Roy McGrath and his friends, it’s time to grow up, or grow apart.

Set in a small Massachusetts town, The Kings of Innocence details the frequent follies, but memorable triumphs of three twentysomethings struggling in the face of maturity. The old friends see their past and present collide during a tumultuous two-week reunion that changes their lives forever.

At twenty-four, Roy typifies the male ego: swaggering and colorful one minute, bemused and pathetic the next. He has a solid first job, friends to spare and a loving girlfriend, but he’s also cynical, discourteous and desperate for more affection. Arriving back in his hometown to house-sit for his parents, he soon discovers his childhood buddies are equally misguided, especially Jay, who might as well employ a sherpa to take him from one day to the next. Jay is the captain of apathy, which doesn’t sit well with Mark, a self-absorbed cop, who is climbing life’s ladder two rungs at a time. Despite their divergent personalities, the young men prove to be as inseparable as they once were and happily embrace the virtues of debauchery. But it doesn’t last. Their antics continuously rouse conflict until Jay’s gambling debt with the local mob becomes the ultimate crisis. As his debt escalates, his illicit behavior does too, testing the limits of Roy’s loyalty and forcing Mark into an impossible predicament. Life is about to swallow Jay whole. But just when he appears on the brink of ruin, shocking revelations turn everyone’s world upside down.

The Kings of Innocence is an endearing, crudely hilarious coming of age story that celebrates the fierce bond between young men.
